Major Project: Evaluating My New Learning & Skills

Throughout the project, I have learned and picked up new skills from little to no knowledge in relation to both 3D modelling and architectural visualisation. Before I decided to develop a 3D artefact I had been exposed to 3D modelling in the beginning of the academic year as it has shown me a lot of possibilities and that is where my interest begins. For this project, I have learnt from my mistakes as well as equipped with new skills from every stage from modelling to rendering and showcasing the artefact using a fly through approach. For example, in modelling stage, I have made a huge mistake to a point that it may require recreating the entire artefact from the beginning as the model become extremely lagging and unresponsive let along to applying textures and materials.

Fortunately, the issue has resolved after I produced a testing plan to carry out the model in different workstations to see if is either a hardware or software issue. The test has enabled me to discover it was to do with the texture materials I made within the application which requires a large amount of time to render a low poly counts model. This experience has taught me to think outside the box rather than reduce the quality of the model itself. Instead, have a test plan in order to get to the bottom of the problem before taking any actions, this has improved my problem-solving skill. Another area which I have been improved and learnt throughout this project is my technical skills as this project enabled me to use a variety of applications in order to produce a 3D artefact and a fly through video documentary to showcase the artefact’s features and functions.

The modelling stage has enabled me to improve my existing modelling skills from a beginner to an intermediate level. Another area which is also important in the development stage is the texturing development as this depends on how realistic the textures are as it can affect the overall appearance to whether if the model can bring a realistic feel to it. As the model near completion and is in the rendering stage I have encountered another crisis because the model took six days and only rendered six seconds of footage. There must be something wrong with the model setup in terms of lighting, camera setup and project settings, I discovered it is to do with the lighting setup which is why it causes the rendering process too long as it requires the programme to perform a large amount of calculations for each frame. From this mistake, it taught me that always ensure there is a backup version when I can simplify the lighting setup before rendering the model again.

In conclusion at the beginning, of course, I have little to no knowledge in both 3D modelling and architectural visualisation, and through the year I started to know more in 3D modelling has I have created and printed my own custom made an artefact. Also, the module has enabled me to gain knowledge in 3D modelling which has helped for my major study, through the previous module I have gained experience in 3D modelling and understanding how the whole development cycle works. Overall, I would say this is an insight view into architectural visualisation and 3D modelling as well as gained knowledge and experiences in the specialist area of practice.

Major Project: Evaluating My Creative Decision Making

After spending twelfth weeks on the project, my creative decision making has changed from a dynamic state of mind into a more static state of mind. This is due to the fact that in the first few weeks I know I want to create a 3D artefact but I was unsure about the details and the quality of the model itself. However, as the project process and regular meetings with the award tutor, which has helped me to make a firm decision and also rethink about the applications and tools to develop the artefact. Another area is that I have developed a number of sketches which has enabled me to make a creative decision to further develop the sketch drawings into a 3D model that could use in the fly through video documentary.

Also, forefront research has enabled me to think about the creative decision on the types of textures and materials for the model, the forefront research taught me that the 3D model is to demonstrate the details, appearance and scale of the model and in this case, it is in relation to green architecture which requires high level of realism and details. As the project process, I learnt from my mistakes and it was a huge crisis as in the worst-case scenario it may require to create the model from the beginning. The experiment allowed me to experience with different tools and applications before making the decision in using a particular application to produce the materials and I realised that it is practical when it comes to problem-solving.

As the model near completion, the next stage was to think about the types of textures and materials for the exterior of the building. With that in mind, I have looked at my visual research library which I have gathered during the research stage. Those images have helped me think about the appearance of the exterior, it allows me to make a creative decision in order to bring out the realism of the model as this was one of the main goals. Once is completed, a fly through video approach to showcasing the finished artefact as well as explains the features and functions of the model itself. This also requires creative decision making as there are a variety of applications that can perform the similar job, but the question is which one does the best job and cause less to no errors when it comes to rendering the video. My creative decision was to experiment them to see which one offers the best user experience as this can make the process a lot smoother.

Another creative decision making is how I place three cameras to showcasing the aesthetics of the building in such way to visually communicate to the audience, the lighting and shadowing have played an important part as it can emphasise the details and the characteristics of the artefact. The fly through video documentary has been set at ninety seconds long as I did not want to make the video too long as it could get bored and I decided to include a voice over which explains the features and functions to the audience, this is a good way to communicate with the audience since it is not a physically 3D model, and I think a fly through video approach is a good way to showcase the model.

Overall, the project has enabled me to improve and enhance my expertise,  creative thinking skills and intrinsic task motivation as those three components play an important role when it comes to creative decision making.

Major Project: Presentation Day

This is the day where I present my artefact, promotional video and fly through video documentary which I have been worked on for the past twelfth weeks. The script is prepared and printed after a number of practices yesterday, but I was a bit nervous. However, I think the presentation went well as I managed to present all of my works within the given time as well as managed to send my message across without any problems.

The final thing I am going to do before the deadline which is tomorrow afternoon is to update my blog and ensuring all research materials are fully referenced and labelled. Also, finishing the two posts tonight which is the evaluating my creative decision making, and evaluating my new learning and skills.

Major Project: Flythrough Video Documentary, Promotional Video & Presentation Refinement

The flythrough video documentary has finished rendering and is now available to view via YouTube with a short description to say what the video is about. For the promotional video, it is also finished rendering this afternoon and I have a short description of what is the video is about alongside with my social profiles such as LinkedIn, WordPress blog, and websites which enable the audience to interact with the artefact in both virtual reality and standard interaction. However, when I view the finished promotional video, I realised that I forgot to include my

However, when I view the finished promotional video, I realised that I forgot to include my contract detail. So, I had to add the information in Adobe Affect Effects and rendering the video again, luckily, I managed to finish it on the day.

Since, I still have two days till the presentation I have spent some time in proofreading the scripts as well as timed myself to see how long it take me to finish the scripts, ideally, I should finish it within thirteen minutes as two minutes will be used for the promotional video. Unfortunately, I was over by one minutes which means I have to cut down of the scripts and practice again to ensure the flow as smooth as possible.

Major Project: Promotional Video Editing & Final Presentation

Today I have been focusing on the promotional video editing and uploading it to YouTube. I will be using Adobe Premiere Pro to construct my video where I add my recorded scripts into the video. Also, a few seconds of the artefact itself to have a sneak peek of what it is about. Once the video has rendered in Adobe Media Encoder then I will import the video into Adobe After Effects where I can add text and apply animation onto the text to make it more interesting for the audience to see.

Also at the same time, I will continue working on the presentation slides where I discuss how I evaluate my final artefact using the criteria which I have identified with images to aid understanding.

Major Project: Promotional Video Structure & Scripts

Have started working on the scripts, at the moment the scripts are at around six hundred words which I need to reduce to around three hundred words in order to fit in the two minutes promotional. I will be focusing on the script and refine the initial scripts as I have to use a long story short approach.

Another area I am working on is the structure of the promotional video, I have made a storyboard to show each section of what I am going to say as well as showing the artefact’s features and functions. The feedback for the promotional video was great and I don’t think there is a need to modify the storyboard but I will check again to ensure it has everything covered before start creating the promotional video.

Major Project: Last Individual Tutorial & Flythrough Video Editing

Yesterday, I had my last individual tutorial with the award tutor, we discussed the current process of the artefact. The artefact is now completed and ran into rendering issues as the artefact takes a few days to just rendered a few seconds. However, it is resolved now by simplifying the lighting. The fly through is done and the scripts for voice over has been recorded, but editing and combining them.

Have started writing the scripts for the promotional video and produced a storyboard and the tutor is happy with the storyboard structure but it has to be within two minutes long. For the presentation, I have a draft but it should focus on establish clear evaluation criteria and justify why these are appropriate ways to judge the project.

Later in the evening, I am working on the fly through video in Adobe Premiere Pro and using Adobe After Effects for title and text animation. I am near completion to finish the fly through but I will go back to check it again to ensure the video can play in different workstations.

Major Project: Forefront – Industries That Use 3D Models

I am continuing the forefront research in relation to how 3D contents are affecting different types of industries, and how this has been improved.

Education

Before the advancement of computing, the computer at school was not powerful and usually is a single lonely computer available to all student. Fast forward to the present days, technology is around us everywhere and have access at a click of a button. In recent years’ education is stepping into the digital age and there is been a breakthrough in 3D content to be used in a multitude of application.

For example, medical students now have access to 3D anatomical models to help them to understand the human anatomy in a more in-depth way. Also, there are marketplace sites such as TurboSquid which allows everything to learn and get to know about the human anatomy, as a practitioner I think we have to consider the level of details as well as the realism of the model because this can help students to visualise the model to enable them to understand how each part works together inside the human body.

Manufacturing and Product Design

Manufacturing an aircraft engine or any mechanical object and bring a massive challenge for the engineer. This is because there are hundreds of individual moving parts which must be working together seamlessly in order to ensure the outcome continues to function as expected. Also, there is a cost for producing each object, testing and revising and this will be incredibly costly. However, 3D contents or models enable designer or engineer to understand and visualise the product before taking action. In addition, 3D models can be animated and thoroughly test the object before creating it. I think 3D modelling has a huge impact in terms of health and safety as it can be animated and test the model to ensure the product is safe to use. This is similar to my practice as the principles are alike.

Government and Military

Government development project such as road and highway design which require building management and maintenance, this could be extremely expensive. This is also similar to architecture which requires communicating the vision and scale of the project. This is where 3D plays an important role here, it enables users to build and render photorealistic images and animations from civil data. In addition, there are other 3Dtoolsl which enables user to produce real-time hydrology and hydraulic analysis to simulate drainage in instance of different kind of weather conditions.

Military and government agencies are considering using 3D in simulation to train police officers and soldiers for combat engagements as well as first response management. The advance in recent years’ realism of gaming engines, military simulation can now be tested through the same platform. Although this is forefront in 3D simulation it is part of the development as props and objects are developed in an application such 3ds Max and Maya but it requires Unreal Engine or Unity to plot everything together in order to develop a simulation environment for train purpose.

Major Project: Model Rendering Crisis & Presentation Preparation

The model was rendered for the past five to six days and it only rendered for only seven seconds out of the ninety seconds long fly through video. There must be something wrong with the rendering setup or the properties within the artefact. I decided to terminate the rendering process and trying to find out why it is taking so long to render. After several attempts on changing the render setup but there was nothing wrong with it. Next, I reduced the resolution to a lower pixel but the result was not great.

Finally, I changed some of the lightings and shadowing setups and this was the problem as the programme has to calculate each frame’s light, shadow, distance and depth which causes a very long time in the rendering process. after removed and changed some of the lightings and retry to render the artefact again. The rendering time has improved significantly in terms of speed and time, however, the resolution has reduced slightly but it is acceptable.

Also, I have started developing the structure of the presentation but it is at the initial stage. The presentation is in relation to research and forefront inspiration, the artefact’s target audience, largely focus on reflection and evaluation of the artefact itself, learning outcomes of the course and how this can contribute to my career. However, it needs more refinement as well as that I have covered all of the main points which mentioned on the assignment brief.
